BIG GAME HUNTING GIFT IDEAS

The approach of Christmas means some time off work and the opportunity to hunt. Being that it’s also the gift-giving season, we’d ought to start thinking about what sort of products the people in our lives would benefit from having. Since we don’t know dear Aunt Sally and what she fancies in her free time, we’ll focus on the hunters. These hunting gift ideas are tools that your friends and family will use and benefit from as they take a much needed break in the deer woods for years to come.

My personal favorite hunting socks, from a small company out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, come from Smartwool. They keep my feet warm and provide cushioning in all the right places so that I can avoid blisters. Perhaps most importantly they wick sweat which further helps stave off blisters and keeps my feet from stinking. You won’t be afraid to wear the same pair of socks for several days in a row.

It seems like I drink coffee all day while I’m deer hunting. Even though I don’t always carry a full thermos (rather just a to-go cup), I would bet that many deer hunters have warmed their innards with a midmorning cup of coffee from a Stanley Vacuum Classic Thermos. If you don’t have one, a meat smoker can become a centerpiece of hunting camp. Much like a grill, it’s a gathering place where you might stand around telling stories and enjoying a toddy. Except the great thing about a smoker, and in this case a Traeger, is that you can throw on a pork shoulder, Boston butt, or brisket either the night before or the morning of and have barbecue for lunch. If you’re going to implement cooking, might as well throw in a cookbook. Check out Project Smoke by Steven Raichen. Another good one for the all-around wild game cook is Eat Like a Wild Man: The Ultimate Game & Fish Cookbook by Rebecca Gray. It’s fun to try new game recipes. Plus, you can help break up the repetitiveness of your uncle’s chili you’ve learned to accept every Saturday night of deer season.
